My Family's Fight With FSP

Several members of my family are currently afflicted with Familial Spastic Paraplegia and a few have passed away due to complications with the condition. They are at different stages of the disease where one is confined to a wheelchair and most of the others walk un-aided, but with a noticeable uneven gait.

Some of the most notable symptoms are:

- Uneven gait
- Falling/Losing Balance
- Slurred speech
- Difficulty swallowing
- Rapid, uncontrolled movement of eyes
- Tightness of lower extremities
- Dementia/Memory Loss
- Incontinence

This condition is on my mother's side of the family and it has affected my mother, older sister, younger sister, aunt, (2) uncles, (3) cousins. Sadly, I have lost my mother, younger sister, aunt, two uncles and most recently a cousin.

It is my hope to gather as much information about the disease and share it with doctors who are researching the disease. Family history, geographical location and ethnicity may also be helpful in their research.

Kevin
